Worlds Largest Music Collection Sold on e-Bay

by Brian

I am an avid reader and came across a story from mid February about this music collection that WAS for sale on e-Bay. Starting bid was $3 million. WOW! I don't have near that much money in my PayPal account. I would like to peruse the collection though. Can you imagine?

If you want a glimpse at the ending of the auction and a description of the collection follow this link below

Fascinating. It's like there are whole other worlds out there that we don't even know about.

Just Some Facts on Taxes

by Brian
Thanks to Joe Riha for his research on this. Again, I am just trying to put the facts out there. A lot of us may have trouble if we need to sell our home and/or purchase a home. My question is this: Will YOU and YOUR FAMILY be better off if your income taxes went up? i.e. the new president repeals Bush's tax cuts

Taxes under Clinton 1999                 Taxes under Bush 2008
Single making 30K - tax $8,400           Single making 30K - tax $4,500
Single making 50K - tax $14,000         Single making 50K - tax $12,500
Single making 75K - tax $23,250         Single making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 60K - tax $16,800       Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K - tax $21,000       Married making 75K - tax $18,750
source Tax Foundation

Certain politicians want to play this "Class Warfare" card in their campaign. Their battle cry is basically that the rich do not pay their fair share of taxes. Again, lets look at the facts. These facts come courtesy of the CBO (Congressional Budget Office of the Federal Government)

Taxes paid by highest incomes

  • The top 1% pay 22.7% of taxes.
  • The top 10% pay 50% of taxes.
  • The top 20% pay 65.3% of taxes.
  • The top 40% pay 84.3% of taxes.

Taxes paid by lowest incomes

  • The bottom 20% pay 1.1% of taxes.
  • The bottom 40% pay 6.1% of taxes

Most of us already have decided how we are going to vote in November, and I am not trying to tell you how to vote. Just please be an informed voter. Don't take politicians or media members at their word. Make sure you are making an informed decision when casting your ballot.

Who Will Ask the Tough Questions For US?

by Brian

I have struggled whether to write anything about politics on my blog, but my conscience has gotten the best of me. I will not endorse or slander any of the candidates here, but instead I thought I would look at campaign promises of candidates and write some questions that I would like to have TV or radio journalists ask, so that we as voters know exactly what the candidate is planning to do. Of course, if they are an incumbent we can go to votesmart.org and see how they ACTUALLY voted on issues that are a concern to us.

Anyway, my first post will be about Obama, because I just got a piece in the mail from his campaign. I will print EXACTLY what the piece has written and then follow with my questions. The piece starts "Barack Obama deserves your vote because:"

"1.Iraq: Showing vision, foresight and judgment. Barack Obama opposed the war from the beginning."

My questions: What exactly are you opposed to? as the President opposing "the war" will no longer cut it.Be specific. Why do you call it "War" when  we are fighting terrorists who represent no country in particular?  To whom, or to what actions, do you give credit for the fact that we have not been attacked on U.S. soil by terrorists since 9-11? How will you fight terrorism?

"2.Health Care: Barack Obama is committed to ensuring that all Americans have health care. His plan will save a typical family up to $2500 per year."

My questions: What exactly is your plan? Who will pay for your plan? If the government runs the health care system, who can compete with them to insure that we are all paying market prices? What is a typical family? What do you mean by "save the typical family up to $2500?" Does that mean we will be able to put $2500 in our savings account? Up to $2500, does that mean some of us will actually save less than $2500? How do we know if we are the lucky ones who actually will save the whole $2500?

"3.Education: Barack Obama is committed to our public schools. He supports paying teachers like professionals and making college affordable for all Americans."

My questions: How will you measure the results of the public school system? Why do you want to commit more money to public schools when throwing more money at them has not worked in the past? How much exactly do you want to pay teachers? How will you measure the value that each teacher brings to the marketplace? If people couldn't afford to got to college wouldn't colleges all be out of business by now? Exactly how many people who want to go to college cannot afford to go? How do you know how many? Do we have to pay for them to go to Harvard or would a community college suffice? Do ALL Americans want to go to college? If not, why do we want to pay for them ALL to go? By The Way- every politician gets away with this "ALL Americans" rhetoric in all political discussions. I mean seriously, there are 300 million of us.

There are four more so called "plans" on this flier. I'm sure there are more and better questions that could be asked. I watch some of the news shows and even the debates. Journalists are giving all of these politicians a free pass. Politicians all talk about "my plan for (insert here) would: blah, blah, blah.... They are never asked exactly what their plan is and if we are lucky enough for them to share a plan, they don't mention how it will get paid for.

If you have a McCain or Romney campaign flier, I would like to ask them questions as well. You can call or e-mail me to make arrangements for me to get it from you. Trust me though, the questions will end up being eerily similar to those asked above.

I am held accountable to my clients for my actions. Isn't time that our journalists hold those running for office accountable to there plans, promises  and statements?

Jennie Finch Leaves the Apprentice

by Brian
05_jfinch_01
Sadly, on the last episode of The Apprentice, Donald fired superstar athlete Jennie Finch. Jennie joins Playmate Tiffany Fallon, Olympian Nadia Comaneci, and Rock Star Gene Simmons as the first four celebrities fired on the show.

Jennie, who is as fierce a competitor you would ever want to see on a softball field, just didn't seem to have the same fire in the boardroom. Through the first four episodes, she has remained in the background and paid for it on Thursday.

I like the the Celebrity Apprentice. If you haven't seen it yet, the winners each week get to donate their winnings to a charity of their choice. So far, none of the fired celebs have actually been the reason that their respective teams lost the task. Now that we are down to ten celebs, I expect that to change.

The girls are at a definite disadvantage having the divisive Omarosa on their team.  I would have fired her every week so far, but maybe that is why Donald Trump is at the helm and I am not. Each season he has ended up with the best as his new hire so how can you question his judgment.

The most interesting episode so far was the third episode when Gene Simmons was fired. I am a big Gene fan. As a businessman and marketer there may be no equal. I agreed with Gene that the execs at Kodak made the wrong choice when they awarded the victory to Hydra that week. Gene is only comfortable when he is in the bosses chair and rightfully so. If you haven't read his book, Kiss and Make-Up, I would suggest it. I have it on audio from audible.com and it is narrated by Gene himself. Fantastic book!

I really enjoy the tasks that are assigned and I often learn something from each episode. Still, the best season is Season One! Bill Rancic is really something. One thing I always say about Trump is that whatever he gets involved in he always adds value. The Apprentice is no exception.

Bob Evans New Coffee is Terrible

by Brian

Today I had a breakfast meeting with my preferred mortgage consultant, Will Mendoza, at one of my favorite breakfast restaurants, Bob Evans. Our meeting went well. We discussed how we could better serve our clients through better education and shared technology.

Will is a terrific young man and a welcome addition to my team. Among other things, Will is the V.P. of the local Hispanic Community Chamber of Commerce and an avid Harley rider.

What didn't go well is the cup of coffee. Terrible! As soon as you walk in, there is a huge wall poster extolling the virtues of their new coffee. Blech! It was so bad we asked that it be removed from our bill.

We filled out a comment card expressing our distaste for their new brew. I went online to complain there too, but unless you have some pass code from your receipt you cannot leave a comment. Not very smart marketing. It's a new day Bob Evans, people see through this password or enter your e-mail crap to leave a survey. How do you expect to hear from your paying customers if you make them jump through hoops. Bob Evans, you are the ones that benefit from customer surveys. Make it easy for us to tell you what we think.

By the way, I love your sausage links and pancakes.

Recent FHA Loan Process Meets My Approval

by Brian

My most recent transaction involved an FHA Loan and I have to say the process was very satisfactory. Buyers are required to bring a small down payment, so they end up being better qualified to own a home and able to make the payments. The inspection and appraisal both went well and we settled the whole thing on time.

If you currently have a home for sale, I would suggest being open to accepting FHA financing on a purchase offer for your home. Based on the current market conditions and the state of the  mortgage market, at least the perception of the mortgage market, we will see a lot more homes financed with FHA insured loans. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

Be sure to check with your hired representative, Realtor or attorney,  before making any decision on whether or not to accept an offer from a prospective Buyer.

Countrywide Exec Cashes in on the Way Out

by Brian

Countrywide CEO, Angelo Mozillo, is going to walk away with a severance package of $110 million after the sale of his company to Bank of America for $4 billion. At it’s peak in February 2007, Countrywide had a market value of nearly $26 billion. The company, under his direction, lost almost $2 Billion a month and he gets to walk away with all that money.

We've all heard stories of folks making money even thought they didn't do a good job, but this is unbelievable. If this guy had any scruples he would decline the package based on his "below average" performance. Trouble is, I guess, is that he is probably unemployable at this point.

Good luck to Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis in melding these two diverse cultures together.

You Have to Try This Just Once

by Brian

You absolutely have to try this just once, if you haven't already. The overwhelming sense of joy and relief that I feel having done this I cannot describe in words.

I recently just listened to an old tape set I have from David Allen of "Getting Things Done Fast" fame.
If you have never been exposed to David, do yourself a favor and go to his site and get one of his books or one of his audio programs.

One of things that he said that you have to experience is to have your Inbox in your e-mail COMPLETELY EMPTY. I concur. Just prior to penning this post, I completely emptied my Inbox. WOW! I have been reborn!

Think I'm exaggerating? Go ahead and try it. You'll see. Remember, completely, totally, 100% empty. It's painful to go through, but well worth it.

I had e-mails as far back as the summertime. All I had to do was take the next action for each e-mail. The next action may have been putting into an e-mail folder, scheduling a task, logging on to the recommended website or replying. What was amazing was how many that the next action was DELETE. Why do I put this off?

Now I have a more complete task list and my brain is free!

As far as clearing my inbox on my desk, now that would really be something. I think I'm going to give it a go.

Clear your inbox 100%. Let me know how you feel when your done.

Brian's Journal Visits Conservatory

by Brian
On Wednesday of last week, Brian's Journal traveled to Druid Hill Park and visited the Conservatory. If you haven't been there in a while, now is a wonderful time to go. They have their stunning Poinsettia Show on display. The show, and it is a show, runs from now until Jan 8th. The Conservatory is open 10AM - 4PM Tue thru Sun. Closed on Mon. You can call in advance for a guided tour. Come visit one of Baltimore's Loveliest attractions.

You can enjoy this video I took on my visit. Trust me though, the video does not due justice to the beauty and tranquility you will find there. Take a moment from the hectic holiday hub bub and rejuvenate your spirit. You'll be so glad you did. Life is short.

A relaxing tour through the Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory in Baltimore
